A flour-mill motor, rewound mid-harvest

01Brought in

The problem

The mill's main motor began running hot, then tripped and would not restart. The windings had a scorched smell and one phase read open.

02On the bench

What we found

A single-phasing event had overheated the stator winding. The rotor and shaft were fine; the bearings were worn and noisy.

03The work

What we did

  1. Recorded the original winding data — turns, gauge and connection — before stripping

  2. Burnt out and cleaned the stator slots, fitted new slot insulation

  3. Rewound in fresh copper to the recorded data and varnished the stator

  4. Replaced both bearings and checked the rotor for rub

  5. Ran it on load on the test bench and measured current on all three phases

04Outcome

The result

The motor was back on the shaft before the harvest peak and now runs noticeably cooler. We also suggested a phase-failure relay for the panel.

Our 15 HP chakki motor burnt out in the middle of the harvest rush. It was rewound and back on the shaft inside the week, and it has run cooler since.
