The problem
In February the guesthouse lost supply after the transformer's LV side failed. With the highway closed, sending it to Srinagar was not an option.
02On the bench
What we found
Moisture had got in through a perished gasket and the LV winding had tracked to earth. The HV side tested healthy.
03The work
What we did
Brought the unit into the Leh outlet and dried it out slowly
Rewound the LV winding and replaced every gasket on the tank
Topped up with dry oil and tested insulation resistance twice over two days
Reinstalled it with the owner's electrician and checked voltage under load
04Outcome
The result
The guesthouse had power back within the fortnight, weeks before the road reopened, and the new gaskets have kept the damp out since.
